The first experiments by the government are a success, enhancing the DNA of one platoon of marines by adding that of wolves, making the soldiers stronger and faster, improving their endurance. The marines become true devil dogs and their platoon is nicknamed Hellhounds.
The second and third round of experiments are no less successful, and the papers dutifully cover the results, lauding the supersoldiers as the new line of defence of the country. But those words were premature: scientists tried to achieve too much, and of the subjects of the second round, only half survives. Those of the third round all make it, but they become mindless and hungry creatures — and something in their DNA is contagious, either killing or turning those that come in contact with it.
Society crumbles under the onslaught. The military falls, as does the government. In the cities, human life is wiped out entirely and soon, many of the infected turn on each other and die, too. Some civilians survive in the countryside. Some non-civilians do, too.
There's little infrastructure left. Good luck surviving.
In what used to be Boston, a small group of government officials, military personnel and scientists are working on finding a cure - and fighting for their survival, too.
